Then Naomi, her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, should I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you? Is not Boaz our relative, with whose young women you were? See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. Wash therefore and anoint yourself, and put on your cloak and go down to the threshing floor, but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. But when he lies down, observe the place where he lies. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down, and he will tell you what to do.” And she replied, “All that you say I will do.”
Ruth 3: 1-5 ESV Bible Gateway
Ruth had experienced the provision and blessing from Boaz, but Naomi had a greater vision for Ruth. She could see something better for Ruth than just being a worker in Boaz’s field. She could see Ruth fully redeemed and loved. Naomi’s plan may seem awkward to us in our time. But in that time, this was understood to be the role of a servant – to lay at their master’s feet and be ready for any command of the master. So, when Naomi told Ruth to lie down at Boaz’s feet, she told her to come to him in a totally humble, submissive way. Ruth had the right to request Boaz to fulfill his obligation as her close relative, or she could have looked for other ways. But instead of demanding her right, or questioning Naomi’s instructions, Ruth was willing to trust and submit to Naomi’s directives, and did just what Naomi told her to do.
Do we have a heart that is willing to listen and obey like Ruth even at times when God’s ways may not seem to make sense according to our understanding? Let’s remember that our job is not always to rationalize God’s way, but to trust and obey Him. God’s way is not ours, and His thoughts are not our thoughts. But we can trust Him because He loves us, and He also has a greater vision for us. Is there anything happening today that you don’t know why it’s happening? Humbly bring it to His feet and entrust it to God’s care. He knows what He is doing! One of my favorite songs from Veggie Tales sums it up quite well – “God’s way is the best way, and that’s the way for me!”
Dear Lord, give me a humble heart today and trust that You are God, you are good, and your way for me is the best way!
