The Best Answer to Give (Acts 2:37-40 Devotional)

37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”

ACTS 2:37-40 ESV

What shall we do now?”

People were cut to the heart and they asked this question at the end of Peter’s very first evangelical sharing.  Peter gave one simple yet life-changing answer-

Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ”.

It was a question leading to an invitation to go to Jesus and receive salvation.

We may not consider ourselves experienced preachers, and thus we hesitate to share the gospel with others.  Oftentimes we are afraid to be questioned.  But the Bible has shown us numerous examples of people courageously sharing the good news of Jesus, even when it was their very first time.  There is a saying:

All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten.

Likewise, all we really need have in order to share the gospel, we received when we first believe!  Peter did not rehearse on his first gospel sharing.  He shared what he witnessed – the resurrected Jesus and the words given through the power of the Holy Spirit that rested upon him.   And that’s all we need as well – our genuine story with Jesus and most importantly, the power of the Holy Spirit.  Every believer has it!

We may not have an answer to all of the questions in this world, but we know, and we have the most important answer in life – that is Jesus and His good news!  Nothing brings us more joy than bringing people to Jesus.  He is THE BEST answer and THE BEST gift we can give!

Dear Lord, thank you for your salvation! Though at times I may stumble upon some of the hard questions others asked. Thank you for constantly revealing your love and your goodnesses to me, and that I can trust that you are real and good despite what the world says. Give me the wisdom and faith to share your good news with others. Your name and your salvation are the best answer and gift I can give, because in you is eternal life.
