Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
There are 2 commands and 1 promise in today’s passage.
Commands:
- Do not be anxious. Do you know God can command that we should not worry? Yes, He can because He’s in control of everything. Yes, He can because He has the best timetable in his hand. Yes, He can because everything happens with a purpose, and yes He can because He can use all the brokenness in our lives and turn them into something beautiful.
- In everything, ask, pray and give thanks…., God commands us to present our requests to God. People would say “Why not? Doesn’t hurt to ask, right?” I’d say why not pray and present to God your desires. God knows what you want and knows what’s best for you.
Promise:
The peace of God. How great is it to have peace of God? Do you know God is a peace-giver? The peace he gives isn’t anything this world can offer. It’s not based on wealth or health and vacation or vocation but found in Jesus Christ. God gives us peace by giving us His Son! Peace doesn’t come from what we have or what we can. It comes from who we are with. A child will not fall asleep until he/she holds his mommy’s finger. I’d be at peace when I know someone would navigate for me during a challenging hike. Likely, we not only receive peace from God but also receive the peace-giver Himself. This certainly transcends all our understanding.
Finally,
Yes, you may lose your peace. but you can get it back quick. I lost it when I discovered the catalytic converter of my car was stolen. I lost it when I almost got hit full speed twice on the freeway two days in a row. Yet, I was reminded that God protected me every day. God saved me from the accidents. God will never fail to use these situations to train me or to teach me.
Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, You commanded us not to worry but to ask and pray. If you are willing, I’d like to….1….2….3….(fill in the blank) Please help me with 1….. 2…. 3….(fill in the blank) Thank you for promising the peace that only You can give. I will rest in You and look forward to seeing Your amazing work in my life. Amen
