Devotional, Ephesians

Relying on the Holy Spirit and Walking Cautiously (Ephesians 5: 15-21 Devotional)

15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Ephesians 5: 15-21

When I watch my son play computer games, I see that he is cautious in everything. He cherishes every sub-second, controls every step precisely, and uses the most efficient strategy, and the best computer. He does not let anything deteriorate his action! What about our life focuses? Are we serious and focused on walking cautiously so as not to fall into evil? Are you determined to please the Lord and receive the eternal crown of glory? When you are determined to walk prudently, you will be filled with the Holy Spirit!

There is no verb in verses 19 to 22, and it follows the sentence of being filled with the Holy Spirit. We first need to be filled with the Holy Spirit before we can live out these 5 verses! How to be filled with the Holy Spirit? I would like to share these 4 keys :

1. Faith in God’s Promises – Trust in God’s promise, and experience the presence of the Holy Spirit, it has happened!

2. Ask – Heavenly Father loves to give the Holy Spirit to the children who ask Him!

3. Set the mind on and walk in the Holy Spirit – to give us the Holy Spirit for us to put aside. When we pay attention to the voice of the Holy Spirit, the more mindful we are of the Holy Spirit, and the more we live by the Holy Spirit every day, the more abundant the Holy Spirit will come to us and manifest in us.

4. Obey / Surrender to the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 1:13 When you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Christ, you were sealed with the promise of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 11:13 If you are evil and know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

Romans 8:6 To be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Galatians 5:16 Walk by the Holy Spirit

Acts 5:32 so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.

Holy Spirit, please enlighten me as age! Let me walk cautiously before you, feel your presence, let me set my mind on you, pay attention to your gentle voices, and live my daily life by trusting the power of the Holy Spirit.

  1. Your son’s attitude that remind me how we can put that on following Jesus and not distracting by this world. World is getting crazy and many ways can lead us go astray and bit by bit lead us far from Him.
It is a blessing having Holy Spirit be our guide and patiently reminding us. Let us pay attention the voice of Holy Spirit and willing to obey Him put all the best on us.
