“Find Your Wings” – A Message to the Little People I Serve in our Youth Ministry

We just had an end-of-school promotion and celebration in our children and youth ministry. This is a message I shared with the little people I serve. It is my joy and crown to watch them grow and to grow with them!

My Message to the little Disciples of Christ (DoCs) –

As we gather here today to celebrate those who are getting promoted, we also want to celebrate the bountiful grace we received from God. Looking back on the pictures we took in the past year, I give thanks for how much God has blessed us.  Each moment of us having fun and learning together indicated His love for us.

I also give thanks to all brothers and sisters who gave selflessly in the ministry. To those who faithfully supported our Sunday meetings and weekday fellowships, and for the wisdom they shared and the love and care they showered.  God’s love is certainly shown through these faithful servants of His.

I also want to thank the parents for entrusting us with their children and supporting the ministry in many ways.  Some of them drove not only their kids but others’ to fellowship every week, and we really appreciate that!  We couldn’t have our fellowship without their support!

Many of you in DU (Disciples Union) got taller and stronger this year.  It has always been my joy to watch you grow.  Had there been times of frustration and challenges?  Oh Yeah! Of course!  Especially when I ask a question and I hear no responses.  But when I see you coming to church on Sunday mornings, even when you are sleepy, that tells me something about your heart for God and your love for His family.  I know you could have chosen your comfy bed at home over the chair at church.

Can you do more than just that? I have no doubt that you can. And so, we pray for you all the time.

The song “Find Your Wings” by Mark Harris sums up our prayers so well!  And one of the prayers I would also have for you is  –

I pray that God would fill your heart with dreams.
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
so let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings.”

Mark Harris

When I tried to look up some graphics for wings, all kinds of wings showed up.  Airplanes have wings, birds have wings, butterflies have wings, even flies have wings, and so do chickens and penguins.   I cannot imagine if an airplane is given the wings of a little butterfly or the other way around.  Each of you here is so special and unique.  I cannot tell you which wings are made for you.  But here is a Bible verse you are all very familiar of –

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future

Jeremiah 29:11

God has a unique plan for each of you.  I cannot tell you what it is, but as your teacher and your big sister, I’m committed to loving you, being there for you,  guiding you, and challenging you to find your wings that serve the great purpose God had planned for you.

I also want to point out one thing – penguins have wings too, but they don’t fly.  Their wings are made for another purpose, to swim swiftly through the water.  So don’t worry if you are not flying, as not all wings are meant for flying. God may have another plan for you as He did for the penguins.

So I pray that you’ll find your wings and thrive for God.

On behalf of DoC3, I want to congratulate Trevor and Kyle for making another milestone!

Trevor, I enjoyed having Bible discussions with you because you have a sense of humor, and I could learn something new from your point of view. But I challenge you to speak up more, so We can hear you.  Go and touch more grass!

Kyle, you’re a talented young man! I enjoyed having our boba time and just wish we could have done more. I look forward to seeing your growth in DoC4. they are a nice group of bro/sis you want to hang out and grow together with. I also pray that one day you may serve God with your talents.

And to both of you, I know the DoC4ers are fun and welcoming, and just because you’re going to Doc4 doesn’t mean you can stop talking to us in Doc3, OK?

And to Airi and Evelina, welcome to DoC3, and we can’t wait to have you!

Find Your Wings
by Mark Harris

It’s only for a moment That you are mine to hold
The plans that heaven has for you Will all too soon unfold
So many different prayers I’ll pray For all that you might do
But most of all I’ll want to know You’re walking in the truth
And if I’ve never told you I want you to know that
As I watch you grow

I pray that God will fill your heart with dreams
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
I’m here for you whatever this life brings
So let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings

May passion be the wind that moves You through your days
And may convictions keep you strong Guide you on your way
May there be many moments
That make your life so sweet But more then memories

I pray that God will fill your heart with dreams
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
I’m here for you whatever this life brings
So let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings

It’s not living if you don’t reach for the sky
I’ll have tears as you take off
But I’ll cheer you as you fly

I pray that God will fill your heart with dreams
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
I’m here for you whatever this life brings
So let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings

  1. Really appreciate all the labor, love and sacrifices of the teachers and parents! You are great examples who live out Christ’s love!
I particularly love what your sharing:
“penguins have wings too, but they don’t fly. Their wings are made for another purpose, to swim swiftly through the water. So don’t worry if you are not flying, as not all wings are meant for flying. God may have another plan for you as He did for the penguins.”
Very true! May we all use God’s given unique talents to love one another, and to serve His ministry!
