For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:
28 You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. 29 With your help I can advance against a troop;with my God I can scale a wall. 30 As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. 31 For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? 32 It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. 33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. 34 He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 35 You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great. 36 You provide a broad path for my feet so that my ankles do not give way 37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. 38 I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. 39 You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me. 40 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight.
Psalm 18: 28-40
David started the psalm with “I love you oh Lord”. It doesn’t get more personal than that, does it?
We can break up today’s passage into 3 parts:
- 28-29 – David speaking to God
- 30-34 – David speaking to readers/us
- 35-40 – David speaks to God again
As we are going through the “God is” series, it’s very easy for us to become distant from who/what God is as if we are studying a historical figure. This is absolutely not what God wants. In the Old Testament days, people don’t have books or the bible, they just go before God and talk to Him, praise him and worship Him. That’s all personal experience with God. Please pay attention to the You (God) and I/me (us) in the Psalm and try to relate your own experience to David’s
For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God?
Psalm 47:31
God has been the rock of my life. I accepted Christ 31 years ago. It took me a few years to really decide to give my life to God. I did not regret the decision. God has proven Himself faithful and dependable. He carried me through my school years (a great challenge for a mediocre person like me), losing my mom to cancer, migrating to the US, working at Bayer, and serving God in His family… Who is God besides the Lord? Even if there are other gods, I’d still choose the God I chose. He’s been my faithful friend. Who is the Rock except for our God? He never fails me.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, I love You, love you more than gold or silver. Thank you for being my rock and a good friend. I choose you and will choose you again if I have to Amen!
